What is popular music?

Posted on 6th October 2008 by syndimusic in General

Popular music is music for the masses, disseminated by one or more of the mass media. It differs from art music (think “classical music” here) because of its wide appeal to a diverse general public.

American popular music consists of musical styles that were born in the United States with disparate roots coming from American soil and the immigrants’ native lands gelling up into a cohesive whole.

The most noteworthy American popular music genres are rock & roll, hip hop, Rhythm & Blues, jazz, blues, ragtime, gospel, minstrelsy, Tin Pan Alley pop, electronic dance music (EDM), American folk, and American country music. Other important genres that have had an effect on and American music and vice versa include reggae and world/third world music.

The term “pop music” is sometimes interchangeable with “popular music.” Pop music can mean several things.

1. Any record that has mainstream sensibilities in terms of rhythm, melody, lyrics, and instrumentation.

2. Any record and artist that achieves mainstream success.

3. Follows in the tradition of Tin Pan Alley pop, which was primarily sheet music-oriented.
